About this artwork
According to French legend Mary of Magdala spent the last years of her life in a cave in Provence, France. She fled the Holy Land by boat with a small group.
A sincere, devoted follower of Christ, she spent her life in prayer, contemplation, and service. The legend states that Magdalena dies after receiving holy communion and immediately ascends into heaven accompanied by two angels.
I chose to depict her death differently. Recent scholarship… suggests that her theology was attenuated. Her teachings regarding the role of love and compassion , and the nature of sin are riveting.
I chose the poem by Tennyson, the Lady of Shallot as inspiration. In my painting, "Communion" I depict Mary of Magdala returned to the sea. The moon is crossed by the alpha and omega, the Chi Rho. She is now in communion with her beloved teacher. She has earned eternal life with him.
Dr. JoAnna Falco-Leshin was a professor of rhetoric, literature, humanities and STEM related curricula for over 35 years. A recipient of an endowed chair and the NISOD award for teaching excellence, she considers her former students and her late husband Bob as "the wind beneath her wings." Motivated by her " piccoli amori, her students, " she is creating art that reimagines myth, legend, and the spirituality of Western culture to rekindle a love of what is inspiring in them, especially for women. She has no formal studio training but has spent countless hours studying the works of Leonardo da Vinci.
