Realism is an art movement that was very popular in 19th Century in Europe. It consisted of depicting scenes of ordinary people from everyday life. We also talk about realistic painting to define works that are so realistically painted that they resemble photographs. Realist art was born in the mid the 19th century in France. It was started as a radical opposition to Romanticism, a movement the Realists considered too excessive in the exaltation of emotions. Realist painting has also been thought of as a reaction to institutionalized traditions in the painting world and to the hierarchy of genres upheld by the academy. The most famous Realist work is undoubtedly that of the Realist painter Gustave Courbet, who represented in his painting, ‘The Origin of the World’, what was then unacceptable for academic art. Realist art seeks to represent the world as it really is without embellishing it. This included representations of workers at work or peasants working in the fields. The Realist movement has had strong foundations in Germany but also in the United States, especially with the Ashcan School in the 20th Century.
