About this artwork
"Veil and breath,
Hanging fabrics,
dancing shadows on the skin.
Silence was woven in.
The soul whispers in bursts of light.
Invisible chains vibrate in the wind,
glances pierce the darkness.
Even muzzled, they carry fire
of a world that has yet to be born."
Throughout my long career as a flight attendant with Air France, I was enriched by the human connections I made in countries all over the world. I witnessed societal upheavals firsthand,… and here I wanted to bear witness to the precarious status of women in society. A simple shift in the balance of power is enough for women to be the first to suffer. At the same time, women's resilience remains immense; even when denied, they are capable of any struggle to regain their emancipation. That's certainly why they inspire so much fear...
But to play on provocation, this canvas begins with a drawing of a live model created in a snapshot.
Marie Calmette uses acrylics, ink, and collage, drawing on her graphic arts training in Paris and Bordeaux, and enriched by her extensive experience of travel and aviation. Her hybrid technique blends abstraction and figurative touches, incorporating life drawings, writing, and materials to explore the immediacy of the gesture. Her experimental style invites questioning and freedom of interpretation. Her art, deeply committed and intimate, conveys the vitality of the world, human fragility, and the urgent need to experience the beauty and tension of life, while celebrating creative doubt.
